M.DCCC.LVI. I cannot be be sure but there may be a page detatched at the front. In which case it may have had a previous name on it before Mrs P kindly gave it to James. The page edges are gilt, There is a red and yellow ribbon and an ornamental brass hasp which holds the book closed.

The illustrations are rather nice, a little like early biblical epic films.

Breakfast menu for Cunard Line RMS Etruria for Monday May 2nd 1904. A printed menue qith a flaf with a green lion in the corner. The date is stamped on also 'cocoa' at the bottom beneath the tea. On thick card which is farely brittle and there is some loss on one corner and some chips on edge and one rip of about one and half inches. One small bruise near the bottom. Some dusty marks and may grease? On the back some pencilled shopping list ie 110 Woodbines @ 9.7d and 10 Capstan 1.2d. I can e.mail a photgraph if necessary

A rubbed and worn copy but not too tatty. the front boards has a picture (C.Morse) of a cub and brownie with a rope, Part of the cub has been outlined in pencil.some chipping and rubbing. Printed cloth spine is very faded. A prize inscription for 1929 there are five coloured illustrations tho' one appears to be misnamed. Charles Robinson, D G Eyles, Anne Anderson, W G Buchanan, Mollie Bailey. Many tinted drawings , I love the ones by Joan Hoyle. Inside the spine is loosening but I have not attempted to repair it. A heavy book so postage may need to be adjusted a little.

I believe this to be a copy of Mrs Rundell's cookery book. I the preface it advertises that it was intended for the conduct of the authoress' own daughters. For proper economy she 'has avoided all excessive luxury such as essence of ham' ' as she will recieve from it no emolument, so she trusts she will escape without censure' The Book is very worn, the hard covers have been restitched by hand along both sides of the spine. The publishing history page is missing. There are six small b/w plates which are rather fragile but the rest though lightly tanned are perfectly sound and useable.

This is a cookery book I acquired in Wales. It belonged to a German Lady who I believe married a soldier in the first world war. She came to live in Wales in a small village, the grandson's wife was clearing the house when he died. The book is all in German, I showed it to my German daughter in law and she confirmed that much of it was in old German.It appears to be recipes with prices in DM. All written in a neat easy to read script. It is an exercise book,lined, in a black cover,spine missing. Half the book is written the opposite way up. An interesting piece of social history.
